[As was the case with the “what do I do now that I’ve been let go” checklist and the Affordable Care Act sample exchange notice, I went looking for something on the internet and didn’t come up with what I wanted. So I made a thing and am now sending it out onto the internet.]
It’s Performance Review season at my company! It generally bums me out that most managers hate this process, because it should be a largely positive exercise. Alas.
A nice thing about having a decent number of first-time managers is that I get to try and instill good habits in them from the start, hopefully laying the foundation for decades of positive performance discussions. So this year, I held my standard, mandatory “this is what review season entails, this is what I expect from you, and this is when things are due by” meetings for all managers at the company. BUT, I decided to have an additional, optional workshop (about 3 hours long) for managers who wanted to get more into the soft skills, have an open discussion, and do the occasional role play exercise.
I came up with the following outline (and corresponding work-/info-sheets) for the workshop. I’ve been making a concerted effort to include many different types of learning styles, so this workshop contains instructor lecture, AV clips, solo worksheet exercises, role-play, and group discussion.
