The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I didn’t think I’d enjoy ‘Metamorphosis’ as much as I did. By the halfway point, I was thinking, “Not bad. I get it. Probably don’t need to finish.” But, by the end of the second half, I was left with a series of emotions that I’m sure will persist whenever I reflect on the novel. I’ve added this one to the short list of books that I’ll definitely re-read.
It’s an excellent display of writing prowess, being able to take something somewhat lighthearted and silly and evolve it – slowly, imperceptibly – into something haunting and emotionally complex. But then, I guess, Kafka gave us a heads up with the title, didn’t he?
